Economic data released today:
Jobless Claims:
U.S. Jobless Claims increased by 32K to 493K for week of September 20 compared to survey by economist of a drop by 5K; U.S. Continuing Claims for week of September 13 increased by 63K to 3542000; U.S. Jobless Claims for week of September 13 Revised to 461K from 455K; U.S. Jobless Claims at highest rate since September 2001; Hurricanes Gustav and Ike added 50K to Jobless Claims.
Durable Goods Orders:
U.S. August Durable Goods Orders fell by 4.5 as compared to economists consensus of a drop by 2.0; August Durable Goods Orders Excluding Transportation fell 3.0; August Durable Goods Orders Excluding Defense fell 5.0; July Durable Goods Orders Revised to an increase by 0.8 from increase by 1.3.
New Home Sales:
U.S. August New Home Sales fell 11.5 to 460000 as compared to forecast of 508000 by economists; U.S. July New Home Sales revised to 520000 from original rate quoted by government of 515000; U.S. August New Home Sales at lowest level in 17 years; The median price of a new home fell 6.2 to 221900 in August from 236500 in August 2007. The average home price tumbled by 12.4 to 263900 from 301300 a year earlier.
